Why I chose to homeschool didn’t come from a single decision.

It came from thinking about what I wanted our days to look like, how I wanted him to learn, and the kind of environment that felt right for our family. Like most things, it was something we went back and forth on more than once.

If anything, our experience has been a mix of both traditional school and homeschooling, not a straight path in one direction.

Why I chose to homeschool started earlier than I expected

In a lot of ways, this started back in 2020.

Like a lot of families, I found myself stepping into homeschooling earlier than expected during preschool and part of kindergarten. At the time, I was still running my business, working from home, and trying to balance everything at once.

Looking back, I’m really grateful for that season. It showed me that homeschooling was actually possible for us and played a big role in why I chose to homeschool long term.

Going back and forth between school and home

We didn’t immediately decide to homeschool full time.

There were seasons where we chose traditional school, thinking it would provide structure, routine, and social interaction. And in some ways, it did.

But over time, I started noticing things that didn’t sit right. He was getting easy A’s, but that also meant he would get bored. When he got bored, he would talk more or try to play, which didn’t always go over well in a classroom setting.

What made me question if school was the right fit

What stood out the most wasn’t the behavior itself, it was how it started to affect him.

I could see it slowly impacting his confidence. Being corrected or getting in trouble for things that, in a different environment, wouldn’t have been an issue started to shift how he saw himself.

That was a big turning point in why I chose to homeschool and take a closer look at what environment was actually supporting him.

Why I chose to homeschool despite concerns about socialization

One of the biggest hesitations I had around homeschooling was socialization.

He loves being around other kids. He’s naturally social, and the last thing I wanted was to take that away. That fear kept us going back and forth for a while.

What homeschooling actually looks like for us

Homeschooling doesn’t look like trying to recreate a traditional classroom at home.

We use resources like Miacademy to give structure where we need it, along with things like CrunchLabs and iBricks to make learning more hands-on. We also lean on local businesses and programs that bring their own expertise.

That flexibility is a big part of why I chose to homeschool. It allows us to build something that fits instead of forcing one system to work.

How we handle social interaction now

The part I was most worried about has actually become something we’re really intentional about.

There are so many homeschool meetups, co-ops, and group activities that give kids opportunities to connect. It’s not the same as a traditional classroom, but it doesn’t feel lacking.

If anything, it’s more intentional.

Why I chose to homeschool and what we’re building now

At the end of the day, why I chose to homeschool comes back to what we wanted our life to look like.

More flexibility. More time together. More room for learning in a way that fits him, not just a system.

That doesn’t mean this is the only right choice, and it doesn’t mean we won’t continue to adjust. But right now, it feels like the best way to support him while building a rhythm that works for our family.
